It's interesting how we've all been trained by the media to expect nothing less than never ending selfish enjoyment in life. And the predictable result is never ending dissatisfaction and alienation.
Not to mention people running ever harder in their hamster cages for this illusive never ending enjoyment that never comes. Why? Because it's a spiritual quality and reward - not a product, accomplishment or birthright.
One key marketing technique is to ascribe spiritual qualities to objects being marketed. "Pepsi is Happiness!" "Diamonds - feel the joy" and on and on. It forces us to look at objects and the private enjoyment of them for our deepest fulfillment. Which is like looking to quench ones thirst with baked goods. The more baked goods you consume for thirst, the thirstier and less satisfied you become.
And this helps explain why the wealthiest country on the planet also leads the world in consumption of antidepressants. We're very systematically trained to look for happiness in all the wrong places.
