paranoia and xanax
I'm looking for a plan to help my mom wean off xanax. She has been on it for several years (I would say at least 10) and her doses have increased over time. She now has 3 different doctors prescribing it to her at once. She also has a history of substance abuse (crack cocaine and alcohol). She has been off the cocaine for about 2 years now but still drinks. She has severe paranoia which seems to get progressively worse over time and has gotten considerably worse within the past 2 years. She is always unhappy and thinks people are plotting against her. She finds only negative things out of any situation and dwells on it until she finds a new negative thing to dwell on. I believe these issues are made worse by her xanax use, if not the cause. Another thing that concerns me is that when she moved from her last house, it was discovered that there was large amounts of mold under her bed and she had lived there for about 2 years so I'm wondering if mold exposure can cause mental breakdown as well. She did develop lung problems while she lived there and she gained about 40 lbs.
I talked to her about her xanax use and she seemed open to weaning off it but only if she has something else to take to help with her anxiety attacks. I was thinking GABA could help with that but I don't know if that would be enough.
I need help from someone more knowledgeable with this sort of thing. I would like to lay out a plan for her for how and in what increments to wean off xanax and what supplements she should take to help with the xanax withdrawal and her severe paranoia/depression. Can someone please help with this?
