I have a fabulous soup recipe for when you are sick. I've shared it amongst my family members who now share it with their children - because it works!
The recipe specifically calls for WHOLE cloves of garlic (although I add some chopped, and some crushed, too) in the ORIGINAL recipe that I adapted from.
Another note. If you cut through a clove of garlic, you will see this 'root' imbedded in the clove. With just a few slits of the knife you can cut this part out if you are 'allergic' to garlic (I had a neighbor who was), or if you don't want the garlic breath or the seeping through your skins pores. But you still get the flavor.
However, I'll bet that's where all the benefits are stored!
