I never had much of a problem with hair thinning with Mirena, but definitely have had hormone and birth-control related hair loss in the past.

In my early 20's I took Mircette continuously (no Sugar pill week) for years. Which meant that for years I didn't have a period either. Great at the time, not so great over time.

When I finally went off Mircette it took me six months to have a period again, and in addition, I lost at least half the hair on my head, most of it in a male-pattern-baldness expression -- over the crown and top of my scalp.

However, once I started my period again, the hair grew back. Unfortunately, it grew back curlier and kinkier than before, so now the top of my head is curly and frizzy, and the hair closest to my neck and over my ears is still stick straight. Weird.

Hair thinning can also be related to PCOS. Since Mirena removal I have had several ovarian cysts. These cysts eventually went away, but my gyno wants me to be on my toes for other warning signs of PCOS in the future -- since it can portend other fun health problems, like diabetes.
