Seb Derm Advice

Hi, just wanted to share some advice that helped me get through S.D. so far.

After being diagnosed with it and trying to research this problem myself on the internet, I went through months of worrying and stress.

Over the past 2 and a half months I've been doing much better and my dermatologist says that the problem will clear up eventually after treating it for a while. It's been a bad experience going through it but with some help I got, thankfully I'm improving. I'd like to share the knowledge I've gained about this problem so that the people who read this know which way to go. Here's my experience:

I had a yellowish, crusty buildup on my scalp and the roots of my hair were really thin. I tried many things to get rid of this buildup and nothing really worked until I tried a mild steroid that was recommended to me by a family friend. It's called Dermasmooth. After 3 or 4 uses and washing my scalp, the thick buildup was gone. This will not stop the production of sebum that is occurring, but it was the best thing to get rid of the buildup. Soon after, I found an extremely helpful, kind dermatologist(they're not all like that) who gave me a lot of info and prescribed this other mild steroid, Olux-e. This, over time, will help your scalp stop the overproduction of sebum. The Olux is pretty strong so after about a month, I got a little bit of irritation so my derm. switched me to a milder version.

It really sucks to go through this problem without knowing anything about it. Don't worry too much about it if you have it because you can treat the problem and restore your hair.

I had a ton of questions or my dermatologist and here's what I learned:

-It is treatable, reversible. Hair follicles have a life cycle of about 3 months, so after you treat the problem and your scalp is healthier, your hair should start growing healthier after 3 to 6 months. The problem will not kill your hair follicles, the sebum buildup just causes them to grow in thinner.

-My derm says that I may have gotten it because of the appendicitis I experienced around the same time.

-Diet does not affect it.

-The only other thing that might be beneficial is Biotin.

Hope this helps, because the experience I had was pretty stressful. The main thing is to not worry and don't believe everything you read from people all over the internet. The information and help I got was from a dermatologist. It is also important to remember that one product isn't going to solve it overnight. You have to take gradual steps and time to get rid of the problem.

Good Luck
