I would express it differently.

Scientific research has shown that certain chemicals cause cancer. If they feed enough of these chemicals to mice, they will get cancer. They are specific chemicals which scientists have identified (research continues). Feeding large amounts of other things to mice does not cause cancer.

We are all exposed to small amounts of cancer causing chemicals, for example, some artificial additives in manufactured foods and drinks, water pollution, and air pollution. Yet not all of us get cancer.

Why don't we all get cancer?

The immune system kills cancer cells.

Why do some people get cancer?

Very simplistically - When there is an overload of these cancer causing chemicals, resulting in more cancer cells forming than the immune system can eliminate, cancer occurs.

Not only that. The cancer cells store these cancer causing chemicals.

This is the beneficial effect of cancer. If cancer did not occur, these harmful chemicals would have other harmful effects in the body. Having them stored in cancer cells, prevents the other harmful effects.

Taking this a step further - The cure for cancer is eliminating these cancer causing chemicals. When this is done, the immune system kills cancer cells.
