My Graves' Disease Protocol
If you smoke - stop. If you won't - stop reading. A recent study:
Cigarette smoking affects medical treatment of Graves' disease - This study assessed the effects of smoking cessation on Graves' disease in 76 women who were taking antithyroid drugs. Of these women, 26 stopped smoking completely and 14 reduced their nicotine consumption by more than 75%. Of these 40 women considered quitters, 78% (31 women) had at least a 50% reduction in thyroid stimulating antibodies, and 73% experienced a remission of symptoms (compared to only 13% of the women who did not reduce their smoking). http://www.medscape.com/viewprogram/854_pnt
OK,
There are severe side effects with 'nuclear' medicine. Diet is so important here - I'd be giving that my first shot!
Vitamin C and the B-complex vitamins are important in the treatment of hyperthyroidism. They play key roles in improving the overall function of the immune system and thyroid gland. But - simply taking a pill won't cut it as the body cannot absorb most commercial pills. This becomes more of an issue with hyperthyroidism because digestion is speeded up - making adsorption even more difficult. Vitalerbs is 100% plant based http://www.drchristopher.isbrilliant.com - it is a must. I'd next day air it. Use the search function.
A simple bowel cleanse. Intestinal Formula #1 and Intestinal Formula #2. Both at http://superfood.andmuchmore.com
Basically you take one #1 with dinner. You increase by one pill (don't exceed that - it is powerful stuff) until you have 3 bowel movements per day. Stick at that dose for 7 days. Then you take IF2 5x per day for 5 days. It pulls toxins out, etc. Adding a #1 here and there to make sure you stay at 2-3 bms.
Diet is the main key. Eliminate meat and dairy. The proteins cause an auto-immune reaction and the body attacks the thyroid. Diet Diet Diet. Superfood, as much raw vege and fruits as possible, and lots of raw nuts and seeds.
Alot of this occurs due to leaky gut - large proteins get into the bloodstream and the body attacks. To heal the gut: The
Bowel Cleanse that I noted in the last email (Intestinal Formula #1 and #2).
From http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/mgmh.html you can get slippery elm and licorice. You make a tea from the licorice and make a gruel - 70% slippery elm and 30% licorice tea - take one tablespoon every waking hour for 2 weeks.
Essential fatty acids help too - raw nuts and seeds. Plus you can add a tablespoon of a product called Udo's Choice oil.
One final herbal prep is bugleweed and lemon balm (you'd make a tea). Also available at http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/mgmh.html
If you do eat any meat (once a month kind of thing...) - make sure it is organic. The hormones in meat screw up the human endocrine system. Eat plenty of raw cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, mustard greens, peaches, pears, rutabagas, soybeans, spinach, turnips and collard greens. Also get a moderate amount of soy into the diet (I have recipes below as well as the Soy Milk that we use) These all contain a natural thyroid blocker. Avoid iodized salt and iodine-containing foods, including saltwater fish and shellfish.
Stop dairy. Avoid all caffeine (chocolate too), nicotine. If you are addicted to caffeine - wean off. Half regular and half decaf to start. Then reduce by a 1/4 each day. Add a bit more if a headache occurs. Drink at least half your body weight in
ounces of water per day. Distilled is preferred - filtered is ok. Don't use spring or tap.
There is a great topical called glandular system ointment, http://www.herbsfirst.com/descriptionsformulas/glandularsystemointment.html
this should be applied at least 3x per day to the thyroid. Hydrotherapy is also a benefit. In the shower you put the water as hot as you can directly on the thyroid (careful not to scald) - keep that for 1 minute - then - all cold - for 10-15 seconds. Alternate 3 times at the end of a shower, ending with hot. Then apply the cream.

Here are two EXCELLENT recipes for Grave's and health in general along with the Superfood:
Dr. Furhman's Breakfast:
www.drfuhrman.com
all amounts modifiable
1/2 cup 5 minute oatmeal
westsoy unsweetened vanilla or plain soymilk
some raisins, and or dates, and or currants
as many berries as you want - no limit on any berries. blue are a favorite, but use cran, straw, and rasp to your heart's content
grapes
a handful of nuts (raw almonds, walnuts, etc.). handful is what fits in your palm - not squeezed in a fist
tablespoon of ground flax
I had 6-7 fresh cranberries
any other fruit that you want in moderation
3 ways to prepare - make up the night before and let sit.
I make it up the night before but do not add the soy until ready to eat
Make it up the night before, add the soy in the morning and let sit 15-30 minutes
The night before sit method is the thickest
You can sprinkle wheat germ on it to give it a crunch!
Lunch:
Again, all amounts modifiable
5
oz spring mix (we use earthbound organics). if you freeze it and then thaw it, cover with water, it gets very seaweed like - it blends very easily
1-1.5 cups westsoy unsweetened vanilla or plain soymilk
1 avocado
Juice of 1 lemon
1 banana
1/2 cup + frozen or fresh blueberries
Blend as you add each ingredient.
Finally - for a supplement that is all plant based, not in pill form either, Superfood:
