Resveratrol as a Superior Brain-Protecting Nutrient

Monday, December 12, 2011 - Byron Richards, CCNPrint E-mail

The scientific evaluation of resveratrol continues to impress one and all, with recent research showing extreme protection against the chain of events that leads to cognitive decline and the risk for dementia and Alzheimer’s. Many nutrients now show impressive ability to support the health of your brain and resveratrol sits right at the top of the list.

Resveratrol is best known for its ability to activate the Sirtuin 1 gene (Sirt1), also known as the longevity gene. I have previously reviewed the Science on this topic in my detailed article, Is Resveratrol the Fountain of Youth? This article also explains the value of resveratrol for weight management and cardiovascular health. New studies continue to document the power of how resveratrol operates to protect and preserve your brain (see related articles below for other studies I have posted on this topic).

Mitochondria are your cellular engines and need to maintain energetic gusto in order for cells to work at an optimal rate. Your nerve-transmitting cells rely on mitochondria to make neurotransmitters flow at optimal speed, in turn supporting cognitive function, memory, and intelligence. During aging mitochondria become progressively more “feeble,” which corresponds directly to a decline in brain function. A new animal study shows that resveratrol, as well as melatonin, restore Sirt1 gene function in neuron mitochondria and prevent them from becoming feeble. This is a potent anti-aging effect within the brain.

Another study evaluates microglial inflammation within the brain. Specialized glial cells, called microglial, act in part as your brain’s immune system and help to regulate inflammation. When microglial become overheated from too much wear and tear, then their inflammation contributes to the accumulation amyloid beta plaque which is the hallmark of cognitive decline and risk for Alzheimer’s. Another new animal study has documented the precise mechanism by which resveratrol calms down microglial so they quit making brain plaque.

Besides your adipose tissue, your brain and your liver are the two fattiest organs in your body. Such fats are structural and functional in nature and key to health. Thus, nutrients that protect your liver also protect your brain and vice versa. In another animal experiment researchers induced biliary obstruction resulting in liver damage. Resveratrol reduced the inflammation in the liver (TNFa and IL6), lowered the elevated liver enzymes that reflect liver damage (ALT and AST), and extended the lifespan of the damaged animals.

Resveratrol research continues its impressive string of stunning results, this time demonstrating its valuable role in protecting and preserving the brain and liver.

Horse Chestnut Protects Your Liver from Toxic LPS, 12/11/2011
The horse chestnut tree (Aesculus hippocastanum) produces a seed that is used as a dietary supplement extract. Horse chestnut seed extract (HCSE) is a rich source of a nutrient called aescin (also escin), which is believed to be its biologically active compound. Toxic and inflammatory lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is produced by bacterial infections. A new animal study shows that aescin can reduce the damage to the liver that LPS causes, expanding the value of this unique circulation-support nutrient.

Quercetin May Protect Against Bisphenol A Damage, 12/10/2011
An animal study with far-reaching implications for human health has demonstrated that the bioflavonoid quercetin can prevent damage to DNA and RNA following exposure to bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is a contaminant that is widely found in the environment and our exposure to it is turning out to be a health nightmare. It is typically found in elevated amounts in breast milk. It is an estrogen-like endocrine disrupter. Prenatal exposure often results in low birth weight babies. Early exposure causes later asthma, behavior problems, and fertility issues just to mention the tip of the iceberg. The fact that quercetin may offer some protection is the first good news on this topic, besides trying to reduce exposure.

Quercetin Benefits Blood Pressure & Cholesterol Metabolism in Apo E 3/3 Genotype, 12/09/2011
We are entering a new era of nutritional science, one in which we can now begin to understand the relationship of nutrition and our genetic function. A novel study from German researchers has shown for the first time that in healthy men with an Apo E 3/3 genotype 150 mg a day of quercetin could lower their systolic blood pressure 5.7 points and boost their protective HDL cholesterol by 4.5%, while helping to shrink their waistlines.

Fisetin Demonstrates Potent Anti-Cancer Properties, 12/08/2011
Fisetin is a unique polyphenol flavonoid found in many plants and fruits, especially strawberries and mangoes. Standardized fisetin extracts are available as a dietary supplement and have demonstrated a high level of neuro-protection and support for memory, as I documented in a previous article, Fisetin for Neuro-Protection. An impressive array of new studies shows that fisetin has strong anti-cancer activity.

Blueberries Help Protect Eyesight, 12/07/2011
Blueberries continue to impress as the top super fruit in the world. I have explained in detail in my article, Berries for Brain Protection, their able to preserve and rejuvenate brain cells, based primarily on research done by the United States Department of Agriculture. Other recent studies show that blueberries improve memory, help build bones, help lower cholesterol, and assist in weight management efforts. The latest study, which was done by Chinese researchers, shows that blueberries help protect the retinas of your eyes to help preserve your eyesight.
