Weaning off Xanax

James in another post you said:

When people take anti-anxiety drugs like Xanax the drugs relieve the anxiety by raising levels of gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) in the brain.  GABA acts as both a neurotransmitter and a neurotransmitter inhibitor.  The later effect is what controls anxiety.  Alcohol also raises GABA levels, so it can easily mask a mild case of anxiety.

I have taken low doses of xanax [.25mg for awhile, then .50mg for about six months now] for a few years now to help with insomnia and am considering trying to wean off it now.

Should I do lower and lower dosage over several weeks/months or just start taking the same dose I'm taking now but take it every other night for some weeks/months, then every three days, and so on or should I do both of these?

Also, would it be prudent to start take GABA now to build up the levels in my brain so there's less of a withdrawl experienced?

Thanks as always!
