Gallstones are usually a sign of something else.

There are two main types of gallstones:

1. Cholesterol Gallstones caused by high concentration of cholesterol in the bile, low bile salts or sluggish gallbladder that doesn't contract properly.

2. Pigment Gallstones usually cause by a single event such as illness, infection etc.

Both types of gallstones can become covered in calcium and in some cases calcium gallstones form around crystals in the bile.
