Re: Chlorella questions

We live near some chemical plants so we take chlorella every day. What are your thoughts on it? Is it good to use to bind heavy metals - say, if you have amalgrams (sp)? Is there a specific dosage and type you recommend?

Yes, chlorella is great stuff and is effective for binding heavy metals.  Algins from seaweeds and phytates from grains are also great.

I do not recommend any special type.  All the chlorella I have seen on the market and from raw material suppliers is broken cell wall.

A friend mentioned a brand that is supposed to be better than others - Sun Chlorella (pricey too!!). Their claim:

"Sun Chlorella "A" is the only chlorella to contain a 95% pulverized cell wall without using heat or chemicals."

In my opinion it is sales hype.  Chlorella cell walls are generally broken through centrifugation, so no heat or chemicals are used anyway.  And generally cell walls are broken anyway in the drying process.  And finally, the cell walls are composed of cellulose, which we know is broken down by enzymes produced by the intestinal flora.

As for the amount I recommend 1/2-1 teaspoon three times a day.  Keep in mind that there are other things in the diet that will also be displacing and binding heavy metals.

I also found this claim from Jarrow for Yaeyama:

Yaeyama Chlorella cell walls are broken by high impact jet-spray drying that pulverizes the algae wall for increased absorption of its vital nutrients.

Would love your thoughts, if you have time to comment on this.

Again i feel it is sales hype.
