root canal same as extraction?

Hi, would someone be able to answer a question for me. I need multiple root canals or extractions. I have read about avoiding root canals because they can cause health problems. I do have some serious health issues.

Can you explain one thing for me though? It doesn't make sense to me that a root canal which keeps only the hard tooth structure above it could be any different for your health then a root canal done (always) with an extraction. What is the logic on this?

Granted the tooth structure left in the "just root canal" scenario is alive with blood flow etc. But if there is no root left to be infected, and a close watch is kept on cavities, how could there be a signigicant difference to your health beween this and the extraction?
