Hello John,

Chlorine dioxide is a man made chemical that does not naturally occur in nature.

However, it is believed that it is possible to have trace amounts formed if lightning strikes a salt brine solution.

I think confusion comes into play when people mix up hypochlorous acid and chlorous acid. When you add chlorine to water you form hypochlorous acid. When you add an acid to sodium chlorite you form chlorous acid.
