Re: amalgams a problem
You have a few choices when it comes to chelating.
These are some of the most common methods for mercury.
Cutler's Protocol: DMSA taken every 4 hours (including at night) for 3-5 days plus an equal number of days break. After 4 months you can start ALA every 3 hours (taken with or without DMSA). One good thing about this protocol is that DMSA helps with a variety of metals, not only mercury. Drawbacks include the fact that it's effects are slow, the dosage schedule is inconvenient and DMSA is a bit expensive. Actually, I suggest you use DMSA for at least part of your chelating because it does help with other metals too. I think the slowness of this protocol may be a good way to start chelating. Once you've reduced the total mercury load, then try one of the methods which work best for mercury.
Coriander/Chlorella: Take Chlorella a half hour before eating and coriander while you eat. This protocol only works for mercury and had a number of side effects for me, but 6 months of doing it made me feel better. It's also very cheap. I started it again after using Cutler for more than a year, and I'm not having the side effects I had before.
DMPS (oral or IV): I haven't tried this one since it's not available where I live, but others say it's very good for (only) mercury. Some people have some pretty heavy side effects resulting from this method. I think one of the reasons is because it is very effective, and this can result in an overloading of a person's system. You also need a prescription.
These are oversimplifications of the protocols, so definitely find out more before you try any of them. There are also other methods, but I don't know enough about them to make any effort to describe or recommend them.
Good luck!
