Perhaps the poster meant bacterial or fungal growth in the water container, this can happen, which is why I was out my water container pretty regularly, and replace the DE at the same time.
I don't use a sterile container, and I don't sterilise the water, so bacterial or fungal growth is always a possibility.
Yes, all water is prone to bacterial contamination, even ultrapure waters such as type 1 water. Another good reason to maintain stomach acid and the immune system. For the vast majority of people though the bacteria present in the water is not going to be an issue as we have built up an immunity to so many bacteria commonly present in our waters and foods.
Mold and fungi growth is not an issue though unless there is organic matter present for these to feed on. The only time I got mold growth in my water container was when I added some lemon juice to help acidify the water for better silica to orthosilicic acid conversion.
