Re: following early 1900's treatment protocol for seborrheic dermatitis
An update on my progress since shaving my head and beard. slow but sure improvement. i'm getting more sun on the effected areas.
Folks, i think one thing that we really need to do is to start differentiating between different types of
Seborrheic Dermatitis . from 1500 to 1900 SD was known by at least 3 sub-categories. the modern over generalization is a hindrance to our progress, in my opinion.
i can differentiate right away between two types of SD that occur for me :
1) scalp and nose area type SD. in one word : flakes, a more surface type issue, at least at first appearance. more manageable than number 2.
2) infection of the hair shaft/follicle. this type is the worst for me, and occurs mostly in my beard. the hair follicle is effected, first at the root. it would appear that the malessezia yeast actually eats the very end of the hair follicle first, followed by a whitening and dying of the hair as the whole hair shaft becomes covered in yeast. according to one treatment i saw circa 1900, "the corruption is in the hair's root. the hair must be removed." i am taking the extreme of action of first shaving my entire face, followed tweasing out infected individual hairs, then dousing with tea tree oil. it's a tough ordeal after tweasing out about a hundred hairs, but i have woken up today to have no SD at all on my face. infected hairs come out much easier than healthy hairs. as the beard hair regrows, i will report on the new results. but at this point, my spirits are buoyed, despite the great ordeal.
