I think your ability to wean off the thyroid hormone depends on what you're taking it for. If you're taking it because you had your thyroid removed or destroyed via RAI, the outlook is not good, just because there is little/no thyroid left for the
Iodine to stimulate. If you're taking it because you have autoimmune thyroid disease such as Hashimoto's, the outlook is better but still not great, considering the amount of punishment your immune system has dealt -- some of which may be irreparable? -- over 10 years' time. Finally, if you're taking it for idiopathic hypothyroidism, the outlook is rather good and you should be able to at least significantly reduce your dose if you administer the
Iodine and supplements properly.
Iodine helps your whole body, so there are benefits to taking it even not factoring the thyroid into consideration.
I'm in the process of trying to wean myself off of T4 and although it's too early to declare success, I've been having positive results in just a couple of weeks.
