Has anyone had or heard of cleansers experiencing breaks with reality?

A friend of mine very recently started having breaks with reality, something that has never happened to him before. During one of these breaks he climbed a fence and hurt himself badly enough to be hospitalized. That's when I first heard about it from his brother and realized this friend finished an 8 day master cleanse at almost exactly the same time these episodes started.
The doctors had already looked into trying to correct his potassium levels but thought that should be the only side-effect of the cleanse. They are looking for other reasons this might have happened.
I happen to have just finished a 10 day cleanse myself, so I also know it can be mind-altering. In fact "mind altering" is one of the ways I always (positively) describe it to people. I wouldn't expect a doctor who hasn't either done the cleanse or treated a lot of people who have done it to know about all the effects. (Until there's more money to be made from doing the cleanse, I don't suspect we'll get too many clinical studies.)
My friend otherwise had a great experience during the cleanse which was his fourth. He did say it had a strong effect on his mental state and emotions, which is true for most of us.
It also might or might not be relevant that my friend is over 6 feet tall and has no body fat at all to begin with. I just wonder if that might make the effects more extreme somehow. He is also around 40 years old which is a very strange age for onset of almost any mental illness. This is another thing that makes me wonder if there is a relationship to the MC.
Has anyone else heard of people experiencing extreme breaks with reality during or after a cleanse? I found this note on the forum from years ago that makes me think maybe there really is a connection here. Someone posted that they knoew of 2 people who'd had similar experiences.
