We use 1 gallon jars with white lids...and write on the lids with a "Sharpie" marker - sometimes we put a typical white label on the side of the jar, too.

When we use 1/2 gallon canning jar, we put a typical white label on the side of the jar, and write on that (and on the jar lid, with a Sharpie).

The labels we use are pretty much like the ones on the tincture bottles. You can find all kinds of labels in the office supply section at Walmart or office stores.
