Luella - I haven't thought of it before but it DOES sound like parting wisdom in a way. He certainly knew he was running afoul of the US government with his black listing, deportations, heavy handed surveillance activities done in plain sight for intimidation, etc etc.

JL was the least naive person you'll ever know - so I'm sure the likelihood of his being taken out was a constant weight and concern.
