Its disgusting, but not unexpected, I think governments use whatever comes to hand, to steer the media away from investigating whatever underhanded deeds they are engaged in.

The lives of these people were destroyed, not because they did anything wrong, but to cover up whatever involvement police and government officials may have had in this case, or simply as a smokescreen, to take the media heat off whatever else the government was doing at the time.
