You might be able to walk off the pain or relieve it with exercises - if you are able to walk or exercise with only modest pain. If the pain is bad though, I believe that the FIRST order of business should be to immobilize your back and try to stop the cycle of inflammation/irritation that is causing your muscles to spasm and keep pressure on the nerve. That means giving it a rest and doing so as I described. Then you can look at walking, exercises, etc. And in the meanwhile also consider Grz's good advice about diet.
