do broken stones/metals still work well?

I dropped my carnelian a few years ago and didnt think much of it. thought it would still work just as well since its still the same stone. until i read somewhere someone damaged her stone and said gladly the energy wasnt compromised. well now i bought a bismuth and broke it in half!! so i was wondering, is it ok? is it just two good pieces of bismuth now or is it two not as good? does it apply the same way for metals? i just got it two days ago. *sigh* please help.
