The way I see it, is if people want to base their political decisions on superstition, then why not broaden the product base. One could have a different god for every day of the week, like the Romans did. Or have a living god, like some of the Pacific Island cargo cults, one of them has Prince Phillip as their god, much more accessible and he sends gifts.

If one wants a country, whose political decisions are based on reason and rational thought, plus a well informed citizenry, then separating superstition from politics is the only way.

This is what many of the founders of America sought after, as many of them had seen what happened in England, where the church and state were one and the same.
