Admission by MEPS's of "BIG PHARMAS" INFLUENCE.

This is a letter drafted by yours truly and directed at my European representatives, to which some have replied.
I suggest you read their response to my communication after my reading my own correspondence.

Wednesday 22 September 2010

Dear Stuart Agnew MEP, Andrew Duff MEP, Geoffrey Van Orden MEP, Richard Howitt MEP and David Campbell Bannerman MEP.

I am writing to you out of my concern for the proposed EU Directives which will severely limit, if not eliminate, the choice that I and millions of other UK citizens and Europeans have, in deciding our own health choices.

The proposed directives are aimed at the restrictions on Herbal Medicine and that of Nutritional supplements which have had a unique safety record for thousands of years in the former, and for decades in the latter.

The EU is supposedly committed to a "Safety-Based approach" to the application of legislation regarding Maximum Permitted Levels of nutrients within Europe and ultimately through CODEX on a Global scale.

This is nonsensical in comparison to properly prescribed Pharmaceuticals which are known to be a significant cause of death both here and in the USA.

According to the Nutrition Institute of America.............

"Over 2.2 million people are injured every year by prescription drugs alone, and over 20 million unnecessary prescriptions for Antibiotics are prescribed annually for viral infections. The report also shows that 7.5 million unnecessary medical and surgical procedures are performed every year and 8.9 million people are needlessly hospitalized annually".

In comparison to Pharmaceuticals, Nutraceuticals have a unique safety record, even at therapeutically-high and Orthomolecular doses. MPL's will extinguish the legal right to be treated with therapeutic doses of Vitamins and Minerals, and essentially plays into the hands of the Pharmaceutical Companies who view this as "Competition".

Further, there was not recorded death caused by a vitamin or dietary mineral in 2007, according to the most recent statistics available from the U.S. National Poison Data System. The 132-page annual report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers published in the journal "Clinical Toxicology" shows zero deaths from multiple vitamins; zero deaths from any of the B vitamins; zero deaths from vitamins A, C, D, or E; and zero deaths from any other vitamin.

In addition, there were zero deaths in 2007 from any dietary mineral supplement. This means there were no fatalities from calcium, chromium, zinc, Colloidal Silver , selenium, iron, or multimineral supplements.

There was one death from chronic overdose of magnesium hydroxide, commonly known as the laxative/antacid milk of magnesia, and it was inappropriately listed in the "dietary supplement" reporting category.
Nutritional supplements do not contain magnesium hydroxide.

Over half of the U.S. population takes daily nutritional supplements.

Even if each of those people took only one single tablet daily, that makes 154,000,000 individual doses per day, for a total of over 56 billion doses annually. Since many persons take more than just one vitamin or mineral tablet, the numbers are considerably higher, and the safety of nutritional supplements is all the more remarkable.

61 poison centers provide coast-to-coast data for the U.S. National Poison Data System, which is then reviewed by 29 medical and clinical toxicologists. In 2007, NPDS reported 1,597 fatalities from drugs and other ingested materials. In contrast, not one death was due to a vitamin or dietary mineral supplement.

These figures are also analogous with Europe.

If the EFSA are so concerned with food safety and Nutrient/Supplement safety, then their inquiries and endeavors are misdirected.

Of course, I hope you should all realize that there will be a huge and unprecedented European public backlash against any and all of these draconian measures that the EFSA are proposing in the guise of "safety".
I would hope that we can count on your zealous support in the above, and to do everything within your power to ensure that justice and commonsense prevails.

Your support is also needed against the lobbying efforts of the Pharmaceutical Companies, who should take a backseat in the interests of those who elected you into office, and who you exclusively represent.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Chris Beckett

Dear Mr Beckett

Thank you for your email dated 22nd September 2010, addressed to Stuart Agnew MEP and David Campbell Bannerman MEP. I am replying on their behalf.

Please rest assured that we have been eloquent campaigners against the EU's proposed controls over the licensing of these items. Our MEPs have spoken out against it in the European Parliament and have written articles on the subject.

Our view is that the European Union is being used as a tool for the destruction of the alternative medicines industry. Multi-national drug companies have a vested interest in creating an expensive regulatory system that will put smaller competitors out of business. It is a very effective way of destroying their competition.

Mr Agnew, himself, is a user of alternative medicines and therefore has a vested interest in pursuing this campaign. I also have a personal interest as my mother suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis and has battled this illness for decades using alternative medicines, particularly Chinese herbs. She is seriously concerned that she is about to lose her ability to obtain these medicines. She believes it could end with her being confined to a wheelchair. You can see, therefore, that we are very well motivated!

These are very serious issues and you may rest assured that the UK Independence Party and its MEPs will continue to campaign against the Food Supplements Directive.

Best wishes,

Stuart Gulleford
