i visited the exact same web site you did in my search to find its original meaning. since i was lucky enough to have taken world history classes in another country, as well as in the U.S., i knew the symbol had a different meaning originally, i was just looking for some back-up. i agree with you - symbols can be a very powerful tool, just as the flag representing each nation is. up until a few years ago, i would see an american flag, and it would instill feelings of pride and belonging. when i see one now, usually on a cheap t-shirt worn by a redneck, or on a bumper sticker along with something stupid written next to it like "these colors don't run" i cringe. the symbol, in my mind, is now tainted and bastardized. it has become the ticket to hate, prejudice, and the justification for war and judgement. how sad.
