Re: Dr. Lam, LAF question
Angel...
I'll bet your mom has hashimotos thyroiditis, is taking synthroid and is being under treated because the doctor mistakenly thinks the TSH is the one to monitor instead of FT3 and FT4. Lingering hypo symptoms like your moms is hallmark of obsessive TSH monitoring and T4 only treatment. You and your mom should read Janie Bowthorp's site:
Under treating the thyroid will stress the adrenals too. The heart flutters can be caused by the hashimoto's fluctuating between hypo and hyperthyroidism, low ferritin and low b12 which keeps the thyroid hormone circulating in the blood stream rather than going to the thyroid and causing the feeling of palpations, pounding heart, skipped beats.
The thyroid nodules are a sign of iodine deficiency she should be actively taking iodine to shrink those nodules. A good site your mom should read in addition to the one above is
http://www.naturalthyroidchoices.com
It's written by a woman who is a thyroid cancer survivor. She had her thyroid removed because of the cancer but believes that if her doctor had been more proactive about the nodules and had treated her hashimotos with desiccated thyroid, iodine and selenium, she never would have developed cancer. She is an iodine advocate and knows a lot about hashimotos, thyroid nodules, iodine and desiccated thyroid. Both websites will give you and your mom more information about what's going on so she can request the right labs and finally get rid of those lingering hypo symptoms.
