Fibroids and Contraceptive sponges??

Hi all,

I am new to this forum. I am a 38 yr old woman who has never been pregnant.I have a question that has been bugging me for a while...

In 2007 I ended up in the ER with excruciating pain - just prior I had sex with my boyfriend and as I had my period, I used a contreceptive sponge, as I had done so many times before.

When I went to extract the sponge, the pain was so bad, it felt like I was trying to pull out my internal organs!!

At the ER, they did an ultrasound and said that there seemed to be liquid in the abdomen and that maybe a cyst had burst. Later examinations found several mandarine sized fibroids inside the walls, inside the uterus and on stalks outside of the uterus.

I had a abdominal myomectomy, followed by a hysteroscopy 3 months later.

6 months later, an ultrasound revealed several new fibroids. The surgeon told me that whilst I had a uterus, I would continue to have fibroids.

My question is this - could contreceptive sponges be dangerous to women with fibroids? I would like to use them again, as they are very practical, but I am scared that I might find myself in a lot pain afterwards.

Is my case unique? Is there anyone else who has happen? Thankyou so much for your input!!
