Unraveling the secrets of using glutathione

Have been doing much research on glutathione and its action in the body. Several things stand out.

1) Glutathione appears to be, by far, the best antioxidant in the body.

2) It is required to get rid of heavy metal toxicity (included are mercury, lead, arsenic, and cadmium).

3) It is normally found in HIGH concentrations in the liver, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, and cornea and lens of the eye.

4) It neutralizes free-radicals and neutralizes chemical agents that become free-radicals or act like free-radicals.

5) It boosts white blood cell formation, which helps boost immunity/immune system.

6) It is used by the body to neutralize/remove things like formaldehyde, car exhaust chemicals, cigarette smoke, and certain pharmaceuticals, pesticide and industrial chemicals, steroids, bacterial produced toxins, and alcohol.

7) It plays a role in DNA repair.

8) Has anti-viral properties.

9) Positively affects insulin production and control by the pancreas.

10) Protects red blood cells.

11) Boosts immune enhancement through its affects on blood cells, and facilitating various detox actions and pathways.

11) Can help decrease/reverse cataracts.

12) Is the only anti-oxidant inside the cell mitochondria, which are the energy producing factories in the cell.

13) Is required by the liver for Phase I detoxification pathway in the liver.

14) Is required by the liver to make glutathione-S-tranferase which is required for Phase II detoxification pathway in the liver.

15) With so many chemicals in our environment, glutathione can be easily [and quickly] depleted in our bodies, and without enough glutathione, many functions [especially detox functions] screech to a halt or near halt.

16) Research is showing that there is a correlation with chronic fatigue syndrome and glutathione deficiency.

17) It is directly connected with mercury levels in the body. It appears that if glutathione is low, that mercury accumulates in the body. Also, mercury can block the utilization of cysteine by the body is it is a catch-22.

18.)Glutathione production by the body supposedly drops as you get older. They say as early as your 40s. I wonder if it is a problem that with nearly 70,000 new chemicals in our environment since World War II if it isn't any issue of the glutathione gets depleted and our bodies can't keep up with producing enough of it.

19) Glutathione is composed of 3 amino acids, cysteine, glycine, and l-glutamic acid. But l-cysteine seems to be the limiting factor for the body making glutathione. Swallowing glutathione to increase your levels doesn't work, as the body must break the glutathione down into the respective amino acids during digestion, and then re-assemble it in the liver. However, taking N-Acetyl-cysteine seems to be a good way to provide the body with the cysteine that it needs to make glutathione.

20) If you have enough glutathione then coffee enemas stimulate the production of glutathione-S-tranferase which is partially how coffee enemas work so well to help detox the body.

21) Reduced glutathione appears to help the body with detox. Taking the reduced glutathione in the form of rectal suppositories seems to by-pass digestion where it can be destroyed. But the suppositories are very expensive.

22) Can also by taken by intra-muscular injections or intravenous injections, assuming you can find a doctor who actually knows something and is willing to work with you.

23.) It is possible to get glutathione to be absorbed through the skin by using it in the form of a cream made by a compounding pharmacy. Again, you would need a doctor to work with as this is most probably only a prescription item.

24.) It can be absorbed through a nebulizer.

25.) Foods that seem to help stimulate glutathione production in the body include undenatured whey, and turmeric.

26.) If you want to know what your glutathione level is, it can be tested through Great Smokies Diagnostic Lab. Also, through http://www.spectracell.com
you can get the level of glutathione function in your lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell).
