Leaky Gut/Probiotics?

I am new to this forum (some forums in this cross-post are new to me, that is).
I appreciate its being here -- thank you!

I only would like to start using acidophilus, if it can help me, though I hate using any supplements and really need this as a temporary measure for relief -- I really want to heal myself through fasting and naturally. I really just want to learn to stop overeating!!! And have the long healing experience of a restful fast.

But in the meantime. I am just wondering - what is leaky gut? How do I know if I have it? I have heard probiotics (is this the right term for the acidophilus stuff in all the supplements?) are dangerous to use on top of leaky gut. Does anyone know?

Also - a death from use of probiotics was reported in the case of someone who was immunosuppressed? Does anyone know anything of this?
