Selective deafness?

My mom is 83 years old and claims to be kind of deaf. I never went with her to the doctor who established that, and the hearing devices she uses. She had a surgery at middle age, because she was losing her listening, which was a success.
But there are things I don´t understand, as; if she comes walking toward me and she can only see my back ( as if I´m sitting on desk) if I say something, she can listen it perfectly, and other times, just sitting a few inches in front of her, she says she can´t listen.
She asks me many times to repeat all what I have said again and to move because she can´t listen to me.
She has always been very controlling, and she is getting worst. I just sometimes wonder if she uses these as a controlling method.
Have you heard about something similar?
Can you give any guidance?
TY
