Kaylee's Passing

Many of you have asked if I ever found out what happened to Kaylee. Recently, I spoke to her cardiologist at the childrens hospital and shared the records from the hospital where she passed away. He told me that not only were her heart and spleen not formed right, but she also had a bowel which was not formed right, not attached right and did not function correctly. Hence, when the virus tried to pass through the bowel it probably caused it to spasm or flip. When this happened, the bowel folded back on itself, causing the area which folded to lose it's blood supply and die. As it lost oxygen, it sluffed off tissue, causing the internal bleeding. When the tissue died, it created a severe acidosis in her body which is actually what killed her. Due to the anti-nausea medication she was given, the symptoms were masked until it was too late.

The cardiologist told me the only way to correct this problem is through a major life-threatening surgery which she probably wouldn't have survived even if the condition had been recognized sooner. His comment to me was: "I work with these children 24/7. Most of them are sickly, they don't grow, they are in and out of the hospital with serious conditions and when their hearts give out, they are connected to lots of machines and tubes while they die a slow death. The reason we all loved to see Kaylee come in is because she looked and acted like a normal child. She was in age-appropriate clothes, she was happy and did not appear to have a problem. Although what you went through was horrible, I want you to know that it was a miracle she was alive, much less thriving. She spent her life happy and loved and was taken quickly. These are all things to be extremely thankful for."
