Acne

Acne occurs in part from excess hormones, known as androgens. The liver is responsible in part for keeping androgen levels in check. So keeping the liver "clean" and functioning properly is a great start to preventing acne. The best way to do this is with herbs known as digestive bitters. As the name implies these herbs are very bitter tasting, and they do have to contact the tongue to work. When bitter substances come in to contact with the bitter receptors on the back of the tongue, they stimulate a nerve known as the vagus nerve. This nerve in turn cleanses the liver so it can work more efficiently. It is important to drink plenty of water throughout the day when using bitters to keep from getting sick. And you do not need large amounts. A half a dropper full on the tongue 2 to 3 times daily is sufficient.

B vitamins are also important for the detoxification of hormones. Natural sources are the best such as rice bran, oat bran, seaweeds, nutritional yeast and pollen.

Zinc is also essential for preventing acne. But again do not go overboard. The recommended dose is 50mg daily with your largest meal. Zinc can make you nauseous if there is not enough food in your stomach.

Cold water ginger extracts can help reduce scarring and acne. Ginger contains the strongest digestive enzymes in the herbal kingdom. So it can help exfoliate the upper layers of skin. It also stimulates circulation, reduces inflammation, and kills bacteria, including the bacteria involved with acne formation. The ginger needs to be mixed in cool water and left to sit for a few days in the refrigerator to extract. Heat can damage the enzymes in ginger. After extracted a little rubbing alcohol can be added to keep the extract from molding. The extract can be applied to the face as a face wash several times a day and left on for a while to exfoliate the skin.
