Re: God's Cool Design
Such a tale of hopelessness and helplessness, the concept of original sin is one of the incongruities in christianity that I have never heard a coherent explanation for. I do think its where the guilt gets programmed into the code though. Christians seem to believe that everyone is guilty of sin, even if they themselves have never sinned. It seems they believe that you have to accept jesus and god, ask for forgiveness and you get your sins taken away. To do this you must be able to understand language and be able to read the bible, but babies can't do this.
The mormons and catholics have found a loophole in this little no win clause, the mormons can get baptised for their dead ancestors (this is why they are so into geneology, and they do this baptising by proxy in their temples), and the catholics baptise babies,(if a baby is not baptised and dies, the soul goes into limbo, not quite as bad as hell, but not somewhere you'd want to spend your holidays), so they believe they've got this covered.
Its not a story that I would want my grandchildren to hear.
