Re: The Dance
IC, I think that the reason so many people fall for these cults and there belief systems, has a lot to do with laziness, and the fear of exploring further than people feel comfortable with. People like to belong to groups, and they like nice neat simple answers, (even if these answers don't make any sense, or contain contradictions).
People can quite easily resolve these contradictions with the circular logic provided by these belief systems and these cults. In fact people in cults are actively discouraged from exploring outside the cults programming. "you just have to believe, have faith, don't question god" etc etc.
Cults also give the followers the idea that they are morally superior to others outside of the cult, (we see this in every war, 'god' is on 'our' side, type of thing, whatever version of god, or code, these people are currently following). This is designed to give the followers a sense of power, but no real power, as they are powerless while following their god/gods.
Rather than explore information neutrally, with a desire to increase understanding, its much easier to stick your fingers in your ears and repeat scriptures, or insults, or just shout lalalalala, until the other ideas and the people sharing them, get fed up and go away, leaving the person following their dodgy code, all safe and secure in their little box of belief. (Or in many instances here, a stable of belief).
