Beating Sugar Addicton
If you suffer
Sugar addiction is may be due to an underlying metabolic disorder that causes your brain to be deprived of biological energy called Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP).
This is mainly derived from
Sugar metabolism. If you suffer from insulin resistance, receptors for the hormone Insulin (secreted by the pancreas) fails to transport glucose into the mitochondria of cells. This is where the
Sugar is converted by a long biochemical process into biological energy, ATP. This energy is essential if we want our body to manufacture feel good neurotransmitters such as serotonin.
This may also cause sugar cravings. By consuming extra sugar the body will release more insulin in an attempt to convert it to energy. The increased blood levels of insulin will absorb amino acids (proteins), except tryptophan, which is left behind. With increased tryptophan, the body will now convert this to serotonin, the feel good neurotransmitters. This is why eating sugary foods feels so good. It is a temporary relief from depression. Eating sugary foods is rewarding, however it will increase our insulin resistance. Excess glucose consumption over a long period of time with cause it to be oxidised into free radicals. This can harm the body, cause cancer and all sorts of degenerative diseases. The body defends itself against excess glucose consumption by creating insulin resistance. This stops the absorption of glucose which then accumulates in the body, first as glycogen, and when glycogen stores are full, into fat cell. Hence we see an association between insulin resistance, obesity and
Depression and other mood disorders.
