You do not need an elaborate setup to make drinkable ethanol or moonshine.  But you must do it safely.  First make a wash with white sugar because it produces negligible amounts of wood alcohol.  Then a still can be built with common hardware store materials for a few dollars, allowing the wash to be distilled.  There are some great videos available here that teach you how to make moonshine.
