Re: Exciting Research about Turmeric
The answer to the first question in this post states that "curry comes from the turmeric plant". Sorry about nit-picking but this is not quite true. The following more accurate info is from Wikipedia....
Curry powder is a mixture of spices of widely varying composition based on Indian cuisine. Curry powder, and the contemporary English use of the word curry are Western inventions and do not reflect any specific Indian food. The word curry is widely believed to be a corruption of the Tamil word kari[1], meaning something like sauce, but it may also be derived from the French cuire[2]. In the Western world Curry Powder mixtures tend to have a fairly standardized taste, though a great variety of spice mixtures are used in Indian cuisine... etc.
Turmeric is just ONE of the spicy ingredients of curry powder. Turmeric on its own (and after cooked for approx. 8 mins) has no flavor as such. Before cooking it does. It gives most curries - as well as anything else it is added to - a beautiful orange color, that is very hard to get out of clothes if it stains, so careful when cooking!!!
I personally add turmeric to the rice water, when cooking rice as well as to almost all dishes that are going to be cooked for more than 8 minutes. Adding pepper to turmeric enhances and boosts its efficiency, as some CZer posted sometime back.
So all this just to add ;) you don´t necessarily need to look for curry powder if you only want the turmeric!
Blessings and good health for ONE & all!
