Always wash your hands before applying DMSO!

I found out the hard way about that when I made up my own ointment in a container plastic container and included some DMSO.  That stuff even pentrated my fingernails and I plasticized fingernails for awhile!

DMSO will take anything it comes into contact with and then carry it into your skin (or fingernails in my case), so it is very important to wash your hands thoroughly before applying it.
