Sometimes dreams are just memories of our travels on the astral plane. Maybe, because of the suddenness of his death, he's still earth bound. If so, then hanging out on the astral plane where thoughts are manifested instantly it's possible that you simply ran into him during astral travels. He's lonely so he looks for you when you're there, hence the recurring dreams.
