Warburg, cancer and oxygen- the real truth

Warburg has to be one of the most misquoted people in history. Someone misinterpreted what he really said and this misquote has been repeated over and over. I even heard it expanded on with the claim that Warburg claimed that all disease was caused by a lack of oxygen.

Warburg never claimed that cancer was caused from a lack of oxygen. What he said is that cancer cells are anaerobic, and will continue to ferment REGARDLESS of whether oxygen is present or not. This principle is easily seen with baking yeast. These are also anaerobic microbes. Yet they do their job despite their exposure to oxygen. Anaerobic cells are not affected by the presence of oxygen. They just utilize the available oxygen differently leading to a lowered ATP production. An analogy would be a COPD patient. They are exposed to the same oxygen as everyone else, but they still use a different breathing mechanism. A non-COPD person breathes on a carbon dioxide (CO2) drive. When CO2 levels rise they breathe dropping CO2 levels and raising oxygen (O2) levels. A COPD patient breathes on an O2 drive. When O2 levels drop they breathe to raise their O2. If O2 levels are raised to much they can stop breathing because their O2 levels are elevated. So again we all are exposed to the same oxygen, but there are different mechanisms of how that O2 is used. The same applies to healthy cells vs. cancer cells.

If you think about it why do others claim that when a person is opened up and the cancer is exposed to air that the oxygen causes the cancer to spread. This is also a misconception, but it brings up a contradictory point to the claim that oxygen kills cancer cells.

And if oxygen killed cancer cells then why can't we simply cure cancer with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) or by scuba diving deeply? Both cause super saturation of the tissues with oxygen. Yet, neither one cures cancer.
