he hints at one of the real problems we are having today - "no known pathogen." i think there are a lot of things that are "known" but have not been considered a pathogen before.
many think that these things are coming out of laboratories. i think they are only half right. sure, there may well be a "simon bar sinister" mad scientist or two floating around(most of them government sponsored, not working outside the law like on the underdog show) but i find that the WORLD is the laboratory and WE are the petri dishes. the stuff coming out of the labs are all the chemicals supposedly making our lives better but really just poisoning us all, changing the petri dish medium in our bodies and thus encouraging the growth of things heretofore unknown because they had no place to flourish before and not because they didnt exist at all.
they have been here all along.
our world is dying. the song birds are almost gone. and like george carlin would say in his act, nobody notices, nobody cares. as we create these new mega-niches, something else will take their place. life always finds a way.
