Hey Luellamay, I'm so glad to have run across this post. I wanted to say that I buried my Dad today after caring for him for 3 months and one of the things that really bugged me when he was in the hospital was the fact that I found out that Living Wills mean nothing.
My Dad's Living Will was about 3 years old and the hospital did not want to just accept what was written. Instead they wanted us to ask him again what his wishes were in case they had changed since then. The problem was that he could not tell us because he could not talk clearly and was not in a good mental condition at the time.
Perhaps I'm being too legalistic but I thought if someone went to all the trouble to write out a Living Will...much like one would write out a Last Will and Testament, that the person's wishes should be granted.
Apparently that's not the case.
Whatever we the children said, he said....was considered correct. I was very shocked by this because I had it in mind that the big decision was made, and I would not have to worry with it. I knew what he wished because it was in writing.
Now they tried to put it back on our shoulders. Plus no one checked to see (witnessed)if our Dad really said he wanted to change his mind. They just took our word for it. I could really see this being used incorrectly if a patient's family did not want to be burdened with their poor health.
Anyway, I just wanted to add that along with your post, to get people thinking a little. Thanks for sharing that eye opener. :)
