Re: CASCARA SAGRADA AND SENNA HARMFUL?

Both cascara sagrada and senna contain anthracene derivative compounds which classify them as stimulant laxatives. They inhibit the stationary and stimulate the propulsive contractions of the colon resulted in an acceleration of waste passage through the intestines. Because of the shortened contact time, a reduction of liquid is absorbed in the lumen and water and electrolyte levels are increased in the intestines, and then expelled.

Long-term use leads to losses of electrolytes, in particular potassium ions, and as a result of this to hyperaldosteronism, albuminuria, hematuria, inhibition of intestinal motility, muscle weakness, enhancement of the effect of cardioactive steroids and an influence over the effects of antiarrhytmics. The question of the increase in probability of carcinomas in the colon following long-term administration of anthracene drugs has not yet been fully clarified.

Long-term use=greater than 1-2 weeks
