--Serum Calcium--

Hi Ya'll,

There has been some talk about Serum Calcium vs Calcium Hydroxide(LimeWater) usage.

Serum Calcium is the Calcium measured in the blood.

Lime Water is made by putting Calcium Hydroxide into water.

Unless someone can show me a pipe where when we ingest our foods that contain Calcium or we ingest Lime Water and this can flow thru these pipes Directly into our blood, How can Lime water have a Direct bearing upon Serum Calcium?

The calcium homeostatic system depends on several important factors: parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D, phosphate, and magnesium. PTH serves as a receptor arm to correct alterations in the steady-state level of serum calcium.

Vitamin D increases the concentration of serum calcium by several mechanisms.

The serum phosphorus level also plays a role in the maintenance of a steady-state concentration of serum calcium. While there is no exact solubility product for calcium and phosphorus, a rise in serum phosphate usually leads to a fall in serum calcium.

Alterations of serum magnesium within the normal range (1.5 to 2.5 mEq/L) do not appear to affect the concentration of serum calcium. But hypermagnesemia tends to suppress PTH secretion and may lead to mild hypocalcemia. Conversely, a moderate decrement in serum magnesium may stimulate PTH secretion. With a fall in serum magnesium below a concentration of 1.0 mEq/L, PTH secretion is suppressed and resistance to the action of PTH on target organs develops.

What does all this mean?

Basically that our Serum Calcium Levels are affected by many other factors besides how much Lime Water we may ingest and or How much Calcium may be in the foods we eat!

The measurement of serum calcium is fraught with many possible errors as to Why the Serum Calcium is what it is.

Some of these Many errors involve measuring complexed calcium vs ultrafilterable calcium vs ionized vs the diffusible fraction of calcium, etc.

Then we need to consider how Protein(Nitrogen)NPN may affect the Serum Calcium!

This can be where the real problem begins:

The term "nitrate toxicity" is commonly used but the toxic principle is actually
nitrite. When Nitrate is converted to nitrite. Nitrite is absorbed from the
digestive system converting blood hemoglobin to methemoglobin. Methemoglobin
cannot transport oxygen to body tissues, so People and animals die from oxygen
insufficiency.

As usual not everything may be as it may 1st seem to be!

People who spend all their time crying Wolf, Wolf about the use of Lime water and never mention the real problem of NPN are just chasing their Tail as they run around the tree!
