HAMMER IS A MENTAL APPROACH?

I have discussed Hammer's method with holistic healers as well.
I am concerned of one aspect: the mental work in this approach. I can only presume what I am about to say, as I didn't have a chance to speak to any person that processed cancer and came out of it with his method.
I believe firmly in Hammer's theory but practically I wonder if questionning oneself to find out the emotional shock is too much of a mental work? What I mean is that we don't consider our brain's ability to deviate from the real issues, from the deep issues. We must also put into account our feelings (of pain, of sadness, of grief, of phobias, of fear etc) and process them without a mental involvement...without THINKING.
