Re: Pernicious anemia

My cousin has this. Do you have any ideas on how to deal with this horrible condition? I guess it's a precursor to leukemia....

I don't know where they get the precursor to leukemia part. Most leukemias are viral in origin and have nothing to do with B12 deficiencies. There are several types of pernicious anemia. It can be autoimmune, or it can occur from chronic gastritis, H. pylori infections, etc. Have they determined the cause?

In general they can use sublingual B12 in the form of methylcobalamin to treat the B12 deficiency. It is best to get one combined with B6 and folate since these are also acid dependent for absorption.

Beyond that the best suggestions will depend on the cause of their pernicious anemia.
