According to the New York Times on Aug 6 , 2009 , an operation done on approximately 73,000 people in the US each year to repair osteoporotic fractures with cement is worthless. Recent double blind studies show there is no diference in pain between people who were given the operation and a control group who were cut open but not cemented. This shows the magnitude of the placebo effect and that many docors need money for their mortgage payments
