Re: severe swelling in pregnancy

Hello Dr Mom, about the swelling my fiend is having. I asked my friend to describe her diet and asked her what she was taking and this was her reply to me:

I have to say I do have a pretty good diet. I love to cook and I am a "regular" at whole foods. I eat very little meat- maybe 3-5 meals a week including lunches, and love fruits and veggies. I basically live on the Mediterranean diet. I do have autoimmune thyroid disease, but so far my thyroid levels are normal. This week I am going for testing for Rheumatoid Arthritis, since new autoimmune conditions can develop in pregnancy if you already have one. I hope this is not the case. Maybe it is just the autoimmune component that is causing this, even if there is no thyroid disturbance? My blood pressure did go from 100/50 to 120/70, progressively over three months, although the doctor said a 30 point jump is what they consider pre-eclampsia, so they are ruling that out. I take a prenatal from Rainbow Light and 2 Prenatal DHA from Nordic Naturals. The funny thing is that the same week I switched from the perscription Prenatal (Citranatal) to the Rainbow light, I did start swelling. I mentioned this to my doctor but she thought it was probably a coincidence. I was 16 weeks when the swelling in the wrists started, and then within a couple of weeks, my feet were the size of elephants.
