21 year old female w/ hair loss for 2 years
Hello everyone,
My name is Stephanie and I'm 21 years old. For the past 2 years, on and off, my hair has been falling out. It's all over my head, not in patches or anything.
The first time it happened was from september to january. It was slow at first, but got progressively worse. The next November it started happening again. It seemed like it got worse (meaning hair loss got more aggressive) a lot quicker than the first time. This lasted 'till May. From November to May of that time I got strep throat, mono, esophageal ulcers from an antibiotic, high cholesterol (went from 260 to 275 in a month, and I'd never had high cholesterol in my life, not to mention I eat a low cholesterol diet and my dad has high cholesterol, but it's lower than mine!), anemia (although the doctors say I'm not anemic enough to account for the hair loss)and a ruptured ovarian cyst. Whew! It was a lot. But my doctors didn't link any of those things together! I'm not even convinced that I really had mono, since I was only "sharing saliva" with one other person during that time, he didn't have mono or know anyone with it, and I "shared saliva" with him during the whole time I had mono and he didn't get it, or give it to anyone else he was kissing during that time. I wonder if I was misdiagnosed...
May to July it stopped completely, then started up again, far more aggressive than it's ever been. It didn't even start with a slow loss this time! It went straight in to massive loss.
Anyway, I'm very frustrated about the hair loss. My dermatologist is monitering it and has me using prescription rogaine. My hair grows back, that's not the problem. It just falls out faster than it grows in, so I have new growth, but hair is still falling out. The doctors don't seem to be helping, or looking for answers. I'm trying to do some research on my own, so I can take that to my doctors. Does anyone know of any specific blood tests I should ask for? Any conditions I should look up? Anything?
Sorry, I'm just getting a little desperate.
P.S. My last name is Hair. If that's not irony, I don't know what is.
